I couldn't understand some parts of this article Design in untraditional areas: the prospects of combining Design and Business, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

Well, what a surprise...

Yes, it was a nice surprise to see some familiar faces from Cologne. You are doing a good job of documenting Dott 07 here (KISD students love documenting!!).

So, Dott 07. It was a great day and well worth the drive down from Glasgow. The talk on Thursday afternoon, “The Movement Dilemma” was especially interesting. What surprised me was the wide range of people from different disciplines in the audience, and the fact that out of these, there were very few designers and design students present. It was good to see that Dott had attracted such a wide audience of people involved in transport policy and schools and education, etc. I found Mapping the Necklace a particularly inspiring project. It is a good example of one of the points that was highlighted in the debate – regeneration and evolution has to be from the ground up.

The eco campsite was not quite as exciting as I had envisaged, but maybe that was because it was cold and the idea of camping there sent a shiver down my back! It was not as big as I had thought it would be and there was definitely room to make it more welcoming – offering a communal area for socialising, for instance.

The main exhibition at Dott was good although unfortunately we were a bit short of time by the end. There was an interesting mix of projects. Sometimes it was a bit confusing as to whether some of them were real or concepts, for example Live/Work’s Nesco concept for an electricity monitor.

So did I feel welcome? Yes I did – it is great to have an event like this for free and with lots of exciting activities to do and the catalogue and postcards to take away. The highlight for me was definitely the talk as well as the sexual health project in the exhibition – it was presented well and it was interesting to hear about how a small service design company have got off the ground in the North East.

Looking forward to the next Dott…

I agree. We have are serving excellent coffee for everyone who'd like it free in the New Work space at the festival. We thought it is an excellent way to make people sit down, relax and take in their surroundings. Once people do this, they start to talk to each other, and that's how relationships, whether friendly or professional, are formed. talking to new people about new things is a key part of the festival experience for us.

I am glad you have brought to light Alex's comment on the difficulties of explaining service design, the approaches and the benefits.

In essence, this is my PhD research!

As mentioned, design in untraditional areas is my keen interest, and will always grapple with issues such as these.

ps. I am blogging daily events happening at the festival as well, especially debriefs of the Dott Debates.
